Edinburgh bans advertising of high carbon products

Edinburgh Council has implemented a bold move by banning the advertising of high carbon products on council infrastructure, including cars (except certain electric vehicles), airlines, airports, cruise holidays, and fossil fuel-related companies. This policy, hailed as world-leading, aims to align with the city’s net zero target and Business Plan priorities.

The council’s advertising and sponsorship policy, developed in 2019, gained traction with a motion in October 2022, leading to the exploration of an ethical advertising and sponsorship policy. The ban covers airlines and airports promoting increased flying, fossil fuel companies and their associated entities, and ads for petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles (excluding certain electric and hydrogen-fuelled ones).

Cruise holidays, known for their high carbon emissions and environmental impact, are also included in the ban due to concerns over carbon emissions per passenger kilometre, waste generation, and air quality impacts.

Advocates like Robbie Gillett from Adfree Cities commend the move as a crucial step toward decarbonising the economy, while Freddie Daley from Badvertising views it as a rapid, cost-effective, and popular strategy to reduce emissions and promote sustainability.
