Global Recycling Day 2024

Today is Global Recycling Day 2024, an occasion dedicated to recognising the vital role recycling plays in protecting Earth’s invaluable primary resources and ensuring the sustainability of the planet’s future. Established in 2018, Global Recycling Day aims to unite nations in prioritising environmental conservation.

Every year the earth provides billions of tons of natural resources, which, if not managed wisely, will be depleted. Conscientious waste management is therefore important.

Recycling makes up a big part of the circular economy, effectively preserving natural resources. Annually, recyclables, often referred to as the ‘Seventh ,’ contribute to saving over 700 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, a figure projected to soar to 1 billion tons by 2030. Recycling stands as a defence in the collective battle to protect the future of the planet.

For Global Recycling Day 2024, the Global Recycling Foundation has unveiled the theme #RecyclingHeroes, aimed at highlighting individuals, communities, and initiatives exemplifying the role of recycling in aiming for environmental stability and a sustainable future for all.

As recognition of recycling within the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030, there has been a surge in proactive measures from individuals, governments and organisations throughout the world, supporting the global green agenda.

The mission outlined by the Global Recycling Foundation for Global Recycling Day involves two parts:

  1. Advocating to world leaders that recycling goes beyond national boundaries and needs a unified, global approach for effective implementation.
  1. Encouraging individuals worldwide to view resources as valuable assets rather than disposable waste and promoting a shift towards recognising and rewarding the true worth and potential of recycled materials.
