Sweden’s ‘Secondhand Only’ Mall Redefines Retail

ReTuna in Eskilstuna, Sweden, is the world’s first shopping mall dedicated entirely to secondhand and repurposed items, from fashion and furniture to sports gear and toys. Opened in 2015, it combines style, convenience, and sustainability, offering a curated shopping experience that makes ethical consumption enjoyable.

The mall is part of Eskilstuna’s climate strategy. Donations from residents are sorted at a hub called The Return and redistributed to stores, creating a low-cost, low-waste circular system supported by public funding. Shoppers often mistake items for new, showing how presentation and design can make reuse appealing while challenging the stigma around secondhand goods.

The market for pre-loved products is booming. Secondhand fashion is growing 2.7 times faster than conventional apparel, projected to reach $367 billion by 2029, while the wider secondhand market could hit $1 trillion by 2035. Many consumers still prefer in-store shopping, making ReTuna a model for mainstream retail.

Now ten years old, ReTuna demonstrates that with thoughtful design, infrastructure, and public support, sustainable shopping can be stylish, convenient, and socially meaningful—proving that ethical consumption doesn’t have to feel like a compromise.
