South African Fashion Show Showcases Eco-Creativity with Trash-Made Garments

The saying „one man’s trash is another man’s treasure“ takes on new meaning at the Midlands Trashion Show, where discarded items like newspapers, plastic bottles, and cans are transformed into stunning fashion pieces. Organized by One Planet SA in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, this annual event, now in its tenth year, raises awareness about the environmental impact of single-use plastics.

With over 130 students participating, the show aims to educate both participants and their communities about the growing plastic waste crisis. According to the UN Environment Programme, the planet is overwhelmed by plastic, with seven billion tonnes of waste produced annually, only 10% of which is recycled. This harmful material infiltrates everything, from drinking water to human organs.

Despite these alarming facts, the event was filled with creativity and joy. Students showcased remarkable designs, like Thandoluhle Khumalo’s outfit made from corn meal bags and Hannah Zunckel’s halter top crafted from metal pull tabs with a skirt made from old CDs. Other students displayed impressive engineering skills by constructing wire cars from recycled materials.

The Trashion Show rewarded participants with eco-friendly prizes like bamboo toothbrushes, reusable hygiene products, and recycled bags. The event blended fun and learning, leaving a lasting impact on the participants‘ awareness of plastic waste.
