First Shipping Company to reroute for Sperm Whale Conservation

The Greek shipping company Arcadia Shipmanagement has become the first to alter its routes to protect the endangered sperm whale population in the Hellenic Trench.

Partnering with OceanCare, Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute, WWF Greece, and IFAW, ARCADIA aims to reduce ship strikes, a leading cause of death for these whales, of which fewer than 200 remain.

CEO Capt. Dimitrios Mattheou emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and marine conservation, encouraging the wider shipping industry to follow suit. Scientific studies show over 50% of stranded whales in the area are victims of ship collisions. ARCADIA’s action reflects Greece’s broader effort in preserving marine life while promoting responsible shipping practices.
