New York City’s plan to reduce traffic congestion and lower emissions

New York is reviving plans for congestion pricing, with a reduced $9 toll for vehicles entering lower Manhattan starting in January. Governor Kathy Hochul had halted a $15 toll plan in June due to backlash, but is now introducing a lower charge to fund a $15 billion overhaul of the city’s public transport system.

The plan aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and generate funds for subway repairs and new electric buses. Low-income drivers will receive discounts, and the fee will drop after 9 pm.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Biden administration are expected to approve the plan before Trump re-enters the White House. Proponents argue it will improve New York’s transportation system and climate goals, but it faces opposition from some state lawmakers and residents, particularly in areas with limited public transit.
