Kindergarten opened inside Dementia Care Village in England

After reading Patrizia’s post about the  Dementia Villages a few weeks ago, I thought this was also an interesting concept.

In Chester, England, an innovative dementia care village, Belong Chester, has opened a day nursery, creating a unique intergenerational environment where young children and older adults learn and interact together.

The results have been positive. Residents with dementia show reduced anxiety and agitation, while children benefit from guidance, storytelling, and shared activities. Initially skeptical residents have embraced intergenerational events, enjoying improved cognitive function, mental well-being, and reduced loneliness and depression.

Similar models exist in the United States, such as the Intergenerational Learning Center at Mount St. Vincent in Seattle, which has connected children and seniors since 2015. Belong Chester’s success highlights the potential for such programs to enrich the lives of both young and old, pointing toward a hopeful future for intergenerational care.
