Tanzania’s Railway Infrastructure transformation

The new electric railway terminal in Dar es Salaam, designed to resemble the tanzanite gemstone, represents Tanzania’s growing infrastructure goals and economic development. This rail service connects Dar es Salaam to the capital, Dodoma, in less than four hours, cutting travel time in half. It’s part of a 2,560km Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project that aims to link key cities and neighbouring countries.

Since the railway’s August opening, demand has surged, with daily ridership nearing capacity. The train offers multiple classes with comfortable seating, clean interiors, and on-board refreshments. Security at the tanzanite-themed terminal is high, with luggage scans and checks, yet the atmosphere remains welcoming.

Passengers praise the train’s comfort and efficiency, a stark contrast to the older, slower rail service. While construction faced delays and cost concerns, the service is now generating enough income to cover operations. Future plans include freight services and enhanced power infrastructure to ensure stable operation.

Though the railway benefits many, bus operators, particularly in Dodoma, have seen declines in business as passengers opt for the train’s convenience. Still, community leaders acknowledge the overall value the railway brings, despite some disruptions to local bus services.
