In late 2024, Stockholm introduced the Candela P-12 Shuttle, an electric hydrofoil ferry designed to transform urban waterways. Operating between Ekerö and central Stockholm, the vessel cuts travel times from 55 to 30 minutes and reduces carbon emissions by up to 94% compared with diesel ferries.
Stockholm’s waterways, spanning 14 islands, have long been underused due to slow ferries and infrequent service, with diesel vessels contributing nearly half of regional public transport emissions. The P-12’s wing-like carbon fiber foils lift the boat above the water, reducing drag, energy use, and wake. Onboard computers adjust foil angles in real time, providing a smooth, quiet ride comparable to a car at 45 km/h, with minimal environmental impact.
During the pilot, passenger numbers rose 22.5%, and the Swedish Transport Administration recommended expanding similar services. Replacing two diesel ferries with six P-12s could triple capacity, allow 15-minute departures, and generate estimated socioeconomic benefits of SEK 119 million (€12 million).
Cities including Berlin, Mumbai, and destinations in the Maldives and Thailand plan similar vessels in 2026.
