Danish Schoolkids discover Nine New Tardigrade Species

Nine new tardigrade species were discovered through a citizen science project in Denmark, involving nearly 30,000 schoolchildren. The students collected over 8,000 samples from parks, forests, and cemeteries, assisting researchers in identifying 55 tardigrade species, nine of which were new to science. These resilient creatures, known for surviving extreme conditions, hold potential for biotechnological advancements like dry vaccines and space exploration.

The study also highlighted the importance of citizen science, with many students gaining a greater interest in science. This collaboration has significantly advanced our understanding of tardigrade biodiversity, offering new insights into their ecology and survival strategies.
