Every year, thousands of babies are abandoned in South Africa and many do not survive. Door of Hope is an organisation dedicated to rescuing abandoned babies, providing them with loving care and giving vulnerable children the chance of a brighter future.
Founded in Johannesburg in 1999, the organisation installed a Baby Saver Box in the wall of a church, offering mothers in crisis a safe alternative to abandoning their babies in dangerous places. Since then, Door of Hope has helped thousands of children, providing a safe haven for infants through its two baby homes, which can accommodate up to 70 babies.
Its work extends beyond immediate protection. Through its Children’s Village, Door of Hope is developing a family-style community where orphaned and abandoned children can grow up in stable, loving homes. Each home is designed to accommodate up to six children with a mother or both parents, supported by facilities such as a clinic, library, sports fields and vegetable garden.
Door of Hope aims to nurture children’s physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing, helping them develop confidence, resilience and a sense of purpose. The organisation works towards reuniting children with their biological families wherever possible, or helping them find permanent families through adoption, while providing long-term family care for those who need it.
Through its commitment to protecting vulnerable children and creating loving homes, Door of Hope offers more than safety: it gives children the opportunity to grow, thrive and build a hopeful future.
