Starting in 2026, the University of Sussex will launch the UK’s first undergraduate degree in climate justice, sustainability, and development. The program responds to strong youth demand for deeper climate education—72% of 14- to 18-year-olds want more focus on climate change, especially within humanities and social sciences.
Designed to blend academic theory with practical skills, the course emphasises real-world engagement. Traditional essays will be replaced by formats like podcasts, and students will gain hands-on experience through projects such as the campus forest food garden.
Co-convener Will Lock the course’s innovative, action-oriented approach, preparing students to address both environmental and social dimensions of the climate crisis. By centering climate justice and its disproportionate effects on marginalised communities, the program aims to develop informed, capable advocates and leaders for a sustainable future.
