Teen hotline: Teens Supporting Teens struggling with mental health

In Century City, CA, high school volunteers at Teen Line answer calls, texts, and emails from peers struggling with stress, loneliness, and mental health challenges. Founded in 1980, the nonprofit operates under Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, following a simple model: trained teens listening to other teens.

Peer support is crucial as 40% of U.S. high school students report persistent sadness, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth. With declining federal funding for school mental health programs, Teen Line’s volunteer-driven approach is more essential than ever.

Volunteers undergo rigorous screening and three months of training in active listening, crisis response, and emotional regulation before taking calls. Conversations range from school stress and relationship issues to deeper crises, with volunteers connecting teens to professional resources when needed.

Handling over 10,000 contacts a year, Teen Line provides a safe, confidential space that research shows reduces depressive symptoms and encourages help-seeking. For volunteers, the work builds empathy and life skills; for callers, it can be a lifeline. Teen Line also promotes mental health awareness through outreach and social media, normalising conversations about feelings in a culture that often discourages them.

In a world of rising youth stress and shrinking support, Teen Line proves that listening, empathy, and peer connection can save lives.
