UK Plans Farm Pesticide Reduction to protect bees

The UK government has announced a plan to reduce pesticide use on arable farms by 10% by 2030, aiming to protect pollinators like bees. The move, delayed since 2018, was welcomed by environmental groups, though many criticised its limited scope, as it excludes urban areas and parks.

Unlike the EU’s more ambitious 50% reduction target, the UK will introduce a pesticide load indicator to track progress and promote integrated pest management—using natural methods like pest-attracting plants and predatory insects instead of chemicals. Penalties for irresponsible pesticide use are also included, with attention given to both quantity and toxicity.

Campaigners praised the adoption of the first national pesticide reduction target, but urged further action, especially in urban areas. Farmers supported the plan and called for help in creating habitats for natural pest control. Environment minister Emma Hardy emphasised that the initiative balances environmental protection with agricultural productivity.
