All 50 U.S. states have now introduced right to repair legislation, marking a major milestone for the movement. While not all bills have passed, this signals growing momentum toward repair autonomy.
Right to repair laws, already enacted in Massachusetts, New York, Minnesota, Colorado, California, and Oregon, aim to ensure access to repair parts, manuals, and ban software locks that restrict repairs to authorised technicians.
Currently, 20 more states are actively considering bills, while others continue to navigate the legislative process.
Initially opposed by big tech lobbyists, the movement has gained traction with endorsements from the Biden administration, consumer advocates, and public demand. Companies like Apple, Google, and John Deere have begun adjusting policies in response.
