South African sisters develop brick from recycled material

Two sisters, Kedibone and Kekeletso Tsiloane, inspired by local waste pickers, have created a business manufacturing bricks from 90% recycled materials, including plastic. Starting in 2013, they established Ramtsilo Trading in Sasolburg, Free State, and now supply major stores across South Africa.

Initially collecting waste themselves, they developed a strong, durable brick that underwent extensive testing. Each brick weighs approximately 2.5kg and is made up of 30% plastic. By 2019, they expanded to Gauteng, ramping up production from 6,000 to over 50,000 bricks daily. Despite challenges, they now supply major retailers like Builders’ Warehouse, offering competitively priced bricks.
