Awra Amba: Ethiopia’s Gender-Equal Utopia

In northern Ethiopia, Awra Amba is a village where gender equality is the norm. Founded in 1972 by Zumra Nuru, it challenges traditional roles: women work the fields, men care for children and do housework. The community shares labor and earnings equally, with education and mutual respect central to its values.

The village operates on principles of women’s and children’s rights, care for the vulnerable, and equality. Marriage is based on full consent, and family size is limited to ensure proper care. Education is prioritized, with youth encouraged to return after university to contribute.

Awra Amba’s success is evident in its higher literacy, life expectancy, and gender equality compared to national averages. Its model has inspired nearby villages and attracted global attention, although critics point to Nuru’s central authority and claims of expulsions.

Despite challenges, such as financial strain from tourism loss, the village continues to promote solidarity, even starting a microfinance project to help the wider region.
