Cosmetic animal testing banned in Canada

The policy of testing cosmetic products on animals has been formally banned in Canada, following the implementation of the measures by 43 other countries. The legislation has been passed whereby companies will be barred from testing their cosmetics products on animals. New products that rely on animal testing to determine product safety, will no longer be allowed to be sold.

90% of all Canadians were in favour of the ban which is a rare occurrence. Legislation similar to this was introduced in the European Union in 2004, which made the testing of animals not only unpopular but was also not used anymore in the industry. At the same time the EU brought in the ban, it also invested millions of euros into research and development of alternative testing methods.

Animal rights advocates however think there is more room for improvement such as recalling products from shelves that originally used animal testing for product safety determination. However some animal testing opponents think its better to start fresh.
