New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has announced that from September 2026 it will ban animal fur from all official runways and calendar-listed events. The decision, made by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), applies to fur from farmed or trapped animals, with a limited exemption for Indigenous subsistence hunting.
This move brings NYFW in line with other major fashion weeks, including London, Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Melbourne, and reflects a wider industry shift away from fur. Many leading designers had already removed fur from their collections, investing instead in sustainable and animal-free alternatives.
Framed as part of a broader commitment to ethical fashion, the ban responds to growing public concern over animal cruelty in the industry, which affects millions of animals each year. The decision is widely welcomed as a significant step forward and a clear signal that the future of fashion is fur-free.
