Revolutionary Battery Developments by ETH Zurich Spin-Offs

BTRY is developing solid-state batteries that are faster-charging, temperature-resistant, and longer-lasting than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Using a unique coating technique, BTRY aims to produce batteries thinner than a hair, suitable for a range of applications from IoT sensors to space missions. They plan to establish a pilot production in Switzerland within two years.

8inks introduces a new coating technique called “multilayer curtain coating,” which improves battery production efficiency and scalability. This method aims to replace the outdated slot die technique and meet growing demand by accelerating the coating process. 8inks is testing various battery formats and aspires to set a new industry standard.

Both companies value Switzerland’s strong research and manufacturing infrastructure, which supports their high-quality, -efficient production processes. They focus on sustainability, aiming for CO2-neutral manufacturing and reduced reliance on scarce raw materials.
