Taiwan’s Legless Lizard Confirmed as Distinct Species

After nearly a century of uncertainty, researchers have confirmed that Taiwan’s Formosan legless lizard (Dopasia formosensis) is a distinct species found only in Taiwan, rather than a form of Hart’s glass lizard (D. harti).

Using museum specimens and citizen-science records, the study showed that Taiwanese populations belong to a separate evolutionary lineage. Researchers also confirmed that the blue spots seen in some individuals are a male characteristic, while females and juveniles are plain bronze.

Although the species is widespread across Taiwan, it is rarely seen because of its secretive habits. Establishing its distinct identity is an important step for its conservation.
