eOceans: Using Data to Protect the Oceans

The digital platform eOceans helps improve marine conservation by collecting, organising and analysing environmental data in one central system. Founded by marine scientist Dr Chris Ward-Paige in 2017, the platform was created to solve the problem of fragmented ocean data, which is often scattered across governments, researchers, NGOs and industry groups.

eOceans allows users to upload observations on marine life, pollution, fisheries and protected areas. The platform automatically processes the data, creates maps and reports, and helps experts identify environmental changes in real time. Users keep control over their data, while transparent workflows ensure that results remain traceable and reliable.

The platform is already used in projects in countries including the United States, Canada, South Africa and the Maldives. In California’s La Jolla North marine reserve, scientists and citizen observers use eOceans to monitor wildlife, pollution and human activity. This helps prevent so-called “paper parks” — protected areas that exist officially but lack effective monitoring.

According to Ward-Paige, technology alone is not enough to protect the oceans. Successful marine conservation also requires cooperation, shared data standards and coordination between governments, scientists and industry.
