Solar railways could soon expand across Europe after Swiss start-up Sun-Ways successfully tested photovoltaic panels between active railway tracks in Buttes, Switzerland. The 100-metre pilot project, launched with 48 specially designed panels producing 18 kWp, generated around 16,000 kWh in its first year, paving the way for a permanent installation.
Although rail-mounted solar panels produce slightly less energy than optimally angled rooftop systems, Sun-Ways estimates that covering Switzerland’s 5,300-kilometre rail network could generate around 1 TWh of electricity annually, about 2% of the country’s total energy consumption.
The technology addresses concerns over safety, reflections and durability through reinforced panels, anti-reflective filters and monitoring systems. After a successful first year with no major maintenance issues, the company is now exploring wider applications.
Italy is expected to become the next testing ground, with Sun-Ways partnering with a local company connected to Italy’s railway infrastructure. Pilot projects are also being discussed in countries including South Korea, the Netherlands, China, India and Singapore.
