Denmark’s Pioneering CO₂ Agriculture Tax

Denmark will become the first country to impose a CO₂ tax on livestock emissions starting in 2030. This move aims to cut agricultural CO₂ emissions and inspire global action. The tax is part of Denmark’s goal to reduce greenhouse gases by 70% from 1990 levels by 2030.

The tax, proposed by scientists in February, will charge farmers 300 Danish crowns per tonne of CO₂ in 2030, increasing to 750 crowns by 2035. To ease the burden on farmers, there will be a 60% income tax rebate and subsidies for environmental adjustments.

The tax might raise beef prices by about 2 crowns per kilogram by 2030. Unlike New Zealand, which scrapped a similar plan, Danish farmers have accepted the tax, seeing it as a step toward sustainable farming. Denmark hopes to set a global example for balancing economic and environmental goals.
