Glasgow Trials Eco-Friendly Electric Wallpaper for Sustainable Heating

Glasgow is testing innovative electric wallpaper as a clean heating solution in 12 tenement properties. This eco-friendly technology, developed by the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, the West of Scotland Housing Association, and Glasgow City Council, aims to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions in Scotland’s ageing homes.

Scottish homes, some of Europe’s oldest, lose heat three times faster than the European average due to poor insulation. With 84% of homes relying on fossil fuel heating, they contribute significantly to carbon emissions. Heating buildings accounts for over 36% of the UK’s carbon footprint, prompting Scotland’s New Build Heat Standard to mandate climate-friendly systems in new constructions.

The wallpaper integrates copper strips with graphene or carbon to conduct electricity, emitting infrared heat. Installed on ceilings, it warms spaces within minutes, improving air quality and reducing dampness. This low-energy, gas-free alternative is ideal for Glasgow’s hard-to-heat tenement flats, including those built before 1919.

Equipped with IoT and AI-enabled analytics, the system tracks heat retention and energy use, while tenants provide feedback on comfort. Initial results are promising, with positive responses from residents in trial properties.

This pilot is part of a broader initiative by Scotland Beyond Net Zero to explore sustainable solutions across sectors like energy, transport, and food.
